Effective presentation skills are essential to
succeed at university and in the labour market. The following information
should be assist students in producing strong presentations.
What does a good presentation contain?
- Strong
Opening - Successful presenters grab the audiences' attention with a
catchy creative opening. Some commonly used methods are:
1.) Start with a startling statement: "We
will cease to exist if…"
2.) Start with a story
3.) Ask the audience a question
4.) Start with a quote: "According to Paul Martin…"
5.) Opening Skit
6.) A combination of the above
- Body
of the Presentation - The body of the presentation should contain the
main points of the paper. For example a student completing a
presentation on the positive benefits of free trade would focus on the
pros and cons and spend very little time on the actual definition of
free trade.
- Visuals -
Students must use PowerPoint or overhead slides in their
presentations. If students want to use PowerPoint and no computer is
available in the classroom it is up to them to make arrangements with
I.T.S.

When producing PowerPoint slides or Overheads please
follow these guidelines:
1.) Minimum 20 point font
2.) Limit yourself to 5 words per line and 5 lines per slide
3.) Keep it simple - only illustrate main pts.-- not entire sentence or
paragraph
4.) Replace text with illustrations or graphs whenever possible
5.) Give each visual a title
- Close - The closing segment of
your presentation must reinforce your main points in a memorable
manner. To ensure this, re-state main points and use one of the
techniques offered from the strong opening section.
- Handling Audience Questions -
Handling questions is almost as important as the actual presentation.
The best methods to effectively handle questions are:
1.) Anticipate every potential question or objection
and develop well thought out answers.
2.) If you are unsure about what is being asked then ask the questioner to
repeat the question or to clarify their point.
